CosPlay R&R Room Open

Hosted by The Royal Manticoran Navy, this is a room where cosplayers can go to get away from the convention or have their costumes repaired. Here are the rules for the room: Hours of operation will be Friday 12 pm to 6 pm, Saturday 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday 9 am to 1 pm.

Rest and Repair

Take the time to take a break. It’s hard to be “on” continuously. Your costume and props can wear you down a lot faster than you expect.

Emergency Costume Supplies

Cosplayers are welcome to use the CR&R room and its supplies for emergency repairs. We have experienced costumers available if you need additional help.

Lounge Area Time Limit

Please remember the lounge area is for rest and repair. You are welcome to take as long as you need to get yourself ready to entertain your fans again. Please be courteous and allow others to make use of the room and its facilities as well.

No Unattended Children

The CR&R room is a place for cosplayers to rest. It is not a day care center. For the safety of your children, please do not leave them unattended. Unattended children will be turned over to convention security.

No Photo Zone

No worries about taking off your helmet, wig, or prosthetics and grabbing a bite to eat. The Cosplay Rest and Repair Room is a safe place where you can be out of character without disappointing your fans.

TORG
A group of tourists and workers are at the Pyramids of Giza when the Nile Empire’s maelstrom bridge descends from the sky, crushing the visitor’s center and unleashing a horde of goose-stepping invaders upon the site. The attackers eventually drive the heroes underground into a network of tunnels that shouldn’t exist. The tunnels lead back to the Great Pyramid of Khafre, but they are riddled with death traps, puzzles, and stone guardians animated by the magic of the place. At the center of the network a giant stone scorpion protects a golden scroll that  contains some answers to what’s happening—if anyone can read it! By the time the explorers emerge from the pyramid night is falling. The strange stone portal is gone, but some villains and troopers remain behind searching for the scroll and the Storm Knights. They are holding other tourists hostage, and it’s up to the heroes to escape to Cairo with the scroll and anyone they can rescue.

Magic -- How It Interacts with the Real World
Being able to cast spells seems pretty useful in fiction, games, comics and movies. Mrs. Weasley can wave a wand and bake a cake, but really how would magic work in the real world? Y’know…the everyday stuff, like food, shelter and love. Is it as simple as casting runes to make a bed, create light, or slay your enemies? How do writers create believable magic that isn’t too powerful and destroys everything? Explore magical power on a deeper level.

Ancestor Screening w/Robert Berg III
Come to this screening on Friday night and meet stalwart indie horror scream-queen (and Starfest alumni) Sarah French (Halflife Horror from Hell, Land Shark, Escape from Ensenada) and watch her grab the reins of a double-lead-role in Robert Berg's latest short horror film, Ancestor, now headed to festivals across the country.  Sarah will be at the screening and signing posters afterward!

In Ancestor, modern housewife and mom KATE (played by French), receives an evil 1800's-era relic from long-dead great-grandmother (and doppelganger) KATHERINE that will change her life forever.

Laden with visual effects by Jack Bertram of Motion Forge, Ancestor is a return to short horror for writer/director Berg, whose work includes the disturbing psychological thriller/slasher feature film Misogyny (2012), horror short finis (2010) and several award-winning science-fiction short films.
Calling French "irresistibly evil in any time and in any wardrobe," Berg said that working with her in Ancestor was a "dream come true”.
“Sarah is well-loved by the horror community. She is a superb actress and a real veteran of the genre. I loved seeing her step out of the scream-queen role into a pair of dramatic lead characters, then watch her eclipse the challenge; her performances are exquisite. As an actress she is a director's fantasy, solidly professional, a joy to work with, and my new hero! Privately, she is a kind, engaging, effervescent sweetheart; so unlike the many evil femme fatales on her resume." He added, "The icing on the cake for the film is the incredible score by award-winning composer Mark D'Errico. It still gives me chills every time."

Ancestor was shot in August in Colorado with a supporting cast including talented horror babe and sacrifice Lela Remley (Eye of Noor, Replicant Terminus) and adroit newcomers Natalie De Rosa and Charlie Padgett.

Ancestor was produced by Berg Imaging Inc.

Come to the screening and take home a free "Ancestor" poster!

This film contains some nudity, therefore children not accompanied by parents or guardians will not be admitted to the screening.

Understanding our Trek through Space and Time: Exploring the Intersection of Art and Science
From the beginning, Art and Science have been inextricably intertwined, with one informing and motivating the other and improving our understanding and appreciation of both. Perhaps no other astronomical facility illustrates this better than NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope (HST), whose images have appeared throughout modern culture. Its images appear in magazines and books, on the side of U-Haul trucks, on postage stamps, on greeting cards, in tattoos, in arts & crafts, on clothing, in movies and TV, in music videos and in fine art exhibits. Dr. Carpenter will explore all of these and highlight two on-going and forthcoming major Hubble Art and Science shows that seek to explore, as LA Fine Artist Simone Wright has said, this “intersection of Art and Science, where true discovery, creativity and innovation happen.”

Escape with your life or die trying…

Some say its insanity…Others say its boredom…and yet some believe it is something far more sinister.  Every year around this time, common folk like yourselves are whisked away from their homes into the deep abyss of Pryzaax’s Lair.  It is in this magical place that they scrounge to survive and hope that their wits are enough to see them through.  Although legend has it that a few have made it out; most are never seen from again.  On this day you have been summoned.  What started as a normal day may end in triumph or your agonizing defeat.  Will you conquer your challenges through superior might, overcome each challenge on wits and skill, or will you never be heard from again?  The choice is yours…find out if you have what it takes at Gamefest 2018.

Pryzaax’s Lair is a dynamic role playing event that is simple enough for new players and challenging enough for veteran Gamers.  Every entry into Starfest will be given a character they can use to fight their way through.  You can play the whole event or play a few rooms based on how much time you have.  Jump in and jump out as much as you’d like as long as you can survive.  The event will be held on Saturday and Sunday in the Gamefest area.

Mysterium
In the 1920s, Mr. MacDowell, a gifted astrologist, immediately detected a supernatural being upon entering his new house in Scotland. He gathered eminent mediums of his time for an extraordinary séance, and they have seven hours to contact the ghost and investigate any clues that it can provide to unlock an old mystery.

Unable to talk, the amnesic ghost communicates with the mediums through visions, which are represented in the game by illustrated cards. The mediums must decipher the images to help the ghost remember how he was murdered: Who did the crime? Where did it take place? Which weapon caused the death? The more the mediums cooperate and guess well, the easier it is to catch the right culprit.

All Starfinders complete their training by conferring with Guidance—a network of uploaded personalities embodying paragons from the Starfinder Society's history. Before receiving the blessing of Guidance, the PCs must meet with and assist critical missions on behalf of key leaders of the Society's leading factions. With the events of the Scoured Stars Incident still fresh in everyone's memory, there's plenty that needs doing to set the Society back on track. The Commencement is a replayable scenario designed to help introduce players to the factions of the Starfinder Society and areas of importance on Absalom Station.

The Commencement, a Starfinder Society replayable scenario by Eleanor Ferron for Tier 1-2, was released on August 17, 2017.

Did we leave the stove on? You’ve got an eHarmony date with destiny! Oh, and author guests Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore as they defy all standards of good Starfest behavior and taste with our late-evening screening of DEADPOOL, the best superhero movie ever that’s not BLACK PANTHER, last year’s WONDER WOMAN, 1978’s SUPERMAN, or even 2011’s GREEN LANTERN. If you’re looking for something to round out your Saturday at the con that doesn’t involve dancing, come on in to Main Events and hang for a bit with Kevin, Dayton, and the Merc With A Mouth. Just remember that this flick is rated “R,” as in “It’s REALLY REALLY RATED R,” so be aware. If you give us grief about this, Kevin and Dayton will find you and boom-box "Careless Whisper" outside your hotel room. WHAM! #DriveBy

Planetary Exploration Update: An Inside Look at InSight, the Next Mars Mission
Next month NASA will be launching the InSight Mars Lander from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on a seven-month mission to Mars. It will land near the Martian equator in November, and deploy two instruments onto the surface: a seismometer to measure the subtle vibrations of the crust, and a heat flow probe that will burrow below ground to measure sub-surface heat distribution. The lander will also use precision radio signals from Earth tracking stations to measure the motion of the Martian spin axis to high precision. These measurements will provide data for planetary scientists to understand the nature of the crust and core of Mars, and answer fundamental questions on how the inner planets formed. Pieter Kallemeyn is the leader of the spacecraft team that will monitor the mission from the company’s Mission Support Area in Littleton. He will give us an exclusive inside look at this exciting mission that will unlock the secrets beneath the surface of Mars.

How Much History Should There Be in Historical Fiction?

Creators love to mine the past for fun, especially with time travel, alternate realities and secret histories. Black SailsOutlander (both books and TV), Vikings and Timeless have successfully rewritten history; however, many others were cancelled quickly. And yet, AltHist still is very successful in fiction. What is sacred to the period piece purveyors, and what is fair game? How much research goes into creating a believable world of the past?

To Boldly See What No One Has Seen Before: Imaging the Surfaces of Distant Stars

While we are working to develop the technologies that will bring us to the nearest star systems and beyond, astronomers continue to probe those distant solar systems to understand better what we might find during those first visits. We often talk of the search for exoplanets, but equally important is our need to understand the central stars in those systems. Dr. Carpenter will describe the progress that has been made so far in resolving the surfaces of stars beyond the Sun, using both ground and space-based observatories, and then describe our vision of the ultimate space observatory for obtaining photographs of the surfaces of distant stars. Such a mission will consist of multiple mirrors spread out in huge, sparse arrays, such as the UV-optical Stellar Imager (SI) Vision Mission, with 30 mirrors precision formation flying with a beam-combining hub many kilometers distant.
